I recently found out that the Salish language is spoken by less than 56 people. Most of these people are over 65 years old. At <www.salishworld.com> you can learn about a community on the Flathead Indian Reservation in northwestern Montana that has devoted a lot of energy to preserving the dying Salish language. 37 students from ages 3-14 were enrolled in the 2007-2008 school year at the Salish immersion pre-school and primary school located on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The executive Director of the school, Tachini Pete, has many useful connections to tribal elders who have a knowledge of the language and its history. He is welcomes questions about the school and the language.
